Like the look of Los Cerros but it looks a bit overrated. Any comments on this or recommendations on special other places? One budget option is Altas Cumbres, although its strictly a no-frills place. They all look good. Has anyone stayed at El Pilar? I spent four days in El Chalten in November I actually don't like the newer hotels there, they spoil the small village atmosphere. We stayed in a lovely, well furnished, new, very clean little cabin, owned by a local couple. They built the cabin in front of their house, and it was just a perfect accomodation.
It's called "Cabanas La Loma" and you can find their contact details on www. We did a tour to the Glaciar Grande with Fitzroy Expeditions, and really liked it, our guide, Fernando, was very good and professional. Another day we did a hike starting from the Hosteria del Pilar, which looked very pretty, but it's a little far out. El Chalten is just an unforgettable place, I hope you'll like it.
Let me know if I can answer any other question. Los Nires was nice and clean but in no way spectacular. It's got the cutest little puppy living outside and is right opposite the old chocolate place that does wicked hot chocolate. Apparently, a brothel opened opposite recently called Habibi but don't let that put you off - we didn't notice anything.
We have just returned from 3 weeks in Argentina and spent 2 nights at El Pilar outside of El Chalten. We had a car so drove ourselves out there - about 45 minutes from EL Chalten because of the condition of the road - in a Toyota Corolla the going was slow. We liked El Pilar - the location is fabulous - we looked out on Fitz Roy and the other peaks from our room.
I had no issues with the heating Dinner was good but not great. People gather in the sitting area around the fire prior to dinner for a drink and conversation optional. Only one choice is served so if you have dietary concerns you might me in trouble. There is a starter soup on our two nights - very good , an entree we had pasta one night , steak with salad the next and dessert. They have a decent wine selection or you can bring your own - there was no charge for this. Given the location, I would say the food was fine.
